Google SketchUp

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

What a revelation this is… Google SketchUp is amazing! As I’ve been writing some articles about LittleBigPlanet and the mechanics it supports, I’ve been wanting a means to draw some of the designs. Having checked out the most common open source CAD packages, I was sadly disappointed. Then I recalled hearing about SketchUp and decided to check it out.

I was up and running, and drawing some (for my first efforts) not bad diagrams to illustrate my articles.

Check out this page to see whats possible in around 20 minutes with SketchUp. On all the other applications I tried I couldn’t even draw a line! So, if you want a nice easy to use means of doing some CAD type work, give SketchUp a try.

Sony PS3 Keypad – Review

Rating - 9.0/10.0 - 9
Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Since network play is an important part of the PS3 experience, having a keyboard to chat with is almost essential, but who wants a hulking great USB keyboard sat by the side of them when gaming just to chat quickly… not to mention the USB cables dragging around the place. Enter the official PS3 wireless keypad.

PS3 ‘80022D11′ Error

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

A word of warning… do NOT change the email address or password on your PS3 using the XMB account management options (as far as I can tell this applies to any firmware version from 2.50 onwards). There is an increasing number of players who are reporting that when they do, they start getting this error. Once that occurs, it seems the only fix is to wipe your profile and lose your game saves. Some people only report a trophy sync error, but others… as I say are resorting to the deletions of hours of gameplay to solve the issue.

This is hardly an acceptable solution, so SONY… get your bloody finger out and get a fix for this. We already have one account that is broken… how long before the other breaks! We are running firmware 2.53, and have changed the email address associated with an account after installing 2.50.

Update:- The 2.60 firmware update appears to fix this error for a large number of people. See this post for more information.

LittleBigPlanet Tutorials Published

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

I’ve published the first draft of the majority of my LittleBigPlanet logic tutorials. Included in this first draft are some hints and tips, information about the Excel spreadsheet I use to sketch out ideas, some designs for the basic logic gates, an example of a complex logic design and some background details about my Tic-Tac-Toe level.

Site Tweakage

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Yet more LittleBigPlanet inspired site tweakage… well, perhaps inspired is the wrong word… yet more site tweakage caused by my LittleBigPlanet tutorials pages is a more accurate if slightly longer way of putting things.

The child pages menu that I added has been adjusted to add a widget styled section to the main content section. It works OK in IE 7 and Firefox 3, but if it causes hassles for other browsers, I’d like to know. To check it out, just go to the LittleBigPlanet Tutorials page.

Advanced Custom Field Widget 0.2 Released

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Who would have thought LittleBigPlanet would have such an impact on my blog. In writing my tutorial section about logic and game control mechanics in LBP, I needed to provide some sidebar content on pages (as opposed to posts) that was common to a group of pages. As a consequence, ACFW has had a couple of tweaks this evening.

Visit the ACFW page for more information (links to the page and to download the latest version are in the sidebar).

LittleBigPlanet – My First Published Level

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Woot!! I have just published my first level on LittleBigPlanet. It’s my implementation of Tic-Tac-Toe. Two player only I’m afraid, but grab a friend and check it out (Search for ‘Athena’s Tic-Tac-Toe’ published in the Europe area on the globe). This is the level that has inspired me to write my LittleBigPlanet tutorials, so if you want to know how it works, some of the inner workings will be discussed when I’m through writing :-)

WordPress Upgrade To 2.7-RC1 – Word of warning

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Well… what a busy week this is… another blog upgrade… unfortunately, this one didn’t go so smoothly.

After a busy weekend upgrading the theme and plugins on the site, I figured I’d try and stay on top of the upgrades, so now 2.7 is at release candidate 1, I figured I’d take the plunge. My confidence was boosted by the fact that the Simplicity theme by Zit Seng supports 2.7, he’d already upgraded and the quick test upgrade I did on my working copy on my laptop went swimmingly.

But the live one… I forgot to deactivate the plugins!!! *ARGH!!!!*

The site itself worked sweet, but the admin area was completely knackered. Thankfully I had a backup of the database (give or take a couple of days of stats) and the working 2.6.5 site (complete with plugins etc). One quick restore followed by a full deactivation of the plugins later, and the upgrade went great.

So, I’m sat here typing away on the great new 2.7 admin system and I have to say… I LIKE IT… I like it alot. But for now, that’s all I’m going to say about the latest version.
