About

About… it’s such a broad statement… about me, about this blog, about life, the universe and everything…

Lets start with something simple… me :-)

On-line, my nickname is AthenaOfDelphi. Off-line, I’m known as Christina Louise.

I was born and raised in Leicester (and to save any embarrassment asking a lady her age, I’m the wrong side of 40 but the right side of 45). I’m into all the good things in the world of PC’s… programming, gaming, programming, gaming… and consoles (more specifically the PS3). I play a variety of games, but I prefer the likes of Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, LittleBigPlanet, Quake III, Tomb Raider, the Uncharted series, Spyro, Ultima Online, Minecraft… you get the picture, I’m sure. Like many things in my life, I love variety. Too much of the same and I get bored… very… quickly.

It may come as no surprise then that I’m a software engineer (with nearly 20 years professional experience… now I feel old), most of my skills are based around Delphi (Mainly versions 1, 3, 5, 7, BDS 2006, RAD Studio 2009, XE2 and XE6), but I also dabble with web based stuff, most notably the browser based game a friend (Spirit) and I ran called The Outer Reaches. It’s currently off-line, but when it’s running it runs on a software platform developed entirely with Delphi and Kylix.

From time to time, I post articles (so far, these have included the basics of optimisation and the basics of multi-threaded programming) on . And, when time allows, I develop my commercial software offerings, available from Soft-Answer. You can follow me on Twitter on @athenaofdelphi, PGD on @pascalgamedev and Soft-Answer on @soft_answer.

I’m currently studying for a maths degree with The Open University. I never thought I’d even attempt this based on my past academic experiences with maths, but actually I’ve surprised myself and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. The only problem is, it requires a lot of time that I don’t always have courtesy of work.

In my spare time, I like to listen to (and attempt to write) music, mostly dancey trancey stuff, but I also throw in some more rocky indie stuff and a bit of classical for good measure. I like to walk, take photo’s (I own a Nikon D70… if only I could do it justice with my artistic side), mountain bike (not done nearly enough of that in a very long time) and dabble with digital electronics and PIC’s. When I’m at home, I like to cook (a little too much in my humble opinion *looks at waistline*) and watch good movies and videos. My favourites being Stargate, Star Trek Voyager, Firefly, Babylon 5, Forever, Scorpion and The Walking Dead. Horrors, you can keep em! I also like many of the comic book movies and you can’t beat a good action adventure.

If you want to chat, I may be lurking on IRC on the Netgamers IRC Network in our game’s channel #outerreaches. Or on the PGD channels #pgd and ##pgdce on Freenode.

Now, about my blog…

It’s powered by WordPress and sports a theme based on a design called Simplicity by Lai Zit Seng (I downloaded it from the Zit’s site and tweaked it to fit). It serves as my vent… when I need to vent my spleen about something, it normally gets done here, but I do, from time to time post small reviews, social commentary and other such stuff that people may (if they are so inclined) find interesting. The installation itself sports a number of plugins, far too many in fact to mention here, but I’d just like to say thanks to all the plugin authors that make WordPress a great platform by giving people the power to customise their sites so readily.

Now, the complex stuff… life, the universe and everything… well, actually its easy. To quote Deep Thought… 42.

hi Christina, i am joe from Singapore. I am trying to implement the “Ratings” plugin by Scott Heavner which i have found at http://www.geocities.com/scottheavner/wordpress/. However, there is no instruction on how to use it (the instruction link at http://www.geocities.com/scottheavner/wordpress/ is not valid anymore). Though i have downloaded the plugin v1.2 (ratings.php), but I am not sure on how to use it (sorry, i am not a php programmer). I tried to search the web but there is no instruction available. Are you able to provide some instruction to me on how to use it?

Hope to hear from you soon :)

    Thanks,
    Joe

    • Hi Joe,

I’ve added a brief (and it is brief) page to the tutorials section here. I’ve never used the advanced features of Scott’s plugin (i.e. the parts that let users rate posts), just the parts to provide ratings from me for my reviews. It’s brief because it’s a long time since I set it up and got it working and I haven’t really touched the code since. I think the thing that would stop the plugin working fully as is, is it’s interface to the system database.

If you want something more advanced that is guaranteed to work with the latest version of WordPress, you’d probably be better off looking at the plugin directory.
