Review – Bowes Incline Hotel

Rating - 8.0/10.0 - 8

Well, work has been a bit manic and I’ve been out and about a bit, a week in Lancashire (a couple of reviews to come from that little trip), a week in Belfast (The Barking Dog – still excellent) and two weeks in Durham. The company was booking people into a hotel that was 5-10 minute drive from the customer site, but looking at the place… really not my cup of tea, so on the advice of a colleague (thank you Graham), I decided to stay at The Bowes Incline Hotel.

It’s buried down a narrow road at the side of the A1 just south of Gateshead. The Angel of The North is visible and approximately 1 mile away (as the crow flies).

My room was lovely, and from listening to colleagues that have also stayed there, generally the rooms are all pretty good. The only complaint I would have about my room was the lack of a more upright chair. I had a reasonably sized area I could put my laptop in, but the comfy chair in the room wasn’t quite high enough to make a longer term comfortable working position.

Aside from that minor point I can’t fault my room.

There is a nice choice of breakfast and the cooked is great.

But, in my opinion, the real gem of this place is the lunch and evening food. Every dish I tried (being there for two weeks, I got to try quite a few) was just great.

  • Chicken fajita with Tortillas and Dip
  • Steak, Mushroom and Guinness Pie
  • Steak and Kidney Pudding
  • Hand Carved Ham, Egg and Chips
  • Lasagne with Salad and Garlic Bread
  • Smoked Haddock and Cheesey Mash
  • Mustard Glazed Pork Belly with Apple Mash
  • Chicken Tikka and Rice
  • Beef Fillet Stroganoff
  • Chicken Stuffed with Haggis and Whiskey Cream Sauce
  • 10oz Sirloin Steak
  • Tuna Melt Sandwich
  • Chargrilled Chicken Melt Sandwich
  • Sunday Roast (Beef)

The portions were plenty (by that what I’m actually saying is, the portions were huge), and as I say, every dish was very very good.

Would I go there again? Absolutely. Would I go and eat there? Absolutely. The reason I’m giving it 8 rather than 10 is the chair issue in my room and the A1 was somewhat noisy. Those minor points aside, if you’re in that part of the world and in need of somewhere to stay or eat, check it out. Well worth a visit.
