Its been a long time coming, but finally, I have a new rig

I last did a major upgrade on my machine around 2000, when I went from an AMD K6-266 to an Athlon 800. My Asus A7V and the trusty Athlon 800 have been working hard ever since. The GeForce 2 GTS was replaced by an FX5200 earlier in the year, but overall, the machine remained largely unchanged since it was built over 6 years ago.

So, with the ever increasing power requirements of modern games, I was tired of looking at Quake 4, Just Cause, Doom 3 (to name a few) and thinking…

If only my machine could run them

Well now it can

I bit the bullet last week and decided it was time, so now I’m the proud owner of this rig:-

• Asus M2V Motherboard
• Athlon 64 X2 3600+ (1.9GHz)
• 2GB PC-5400 DDR RAM
• 256MB GeForce 7600GT Graphics
• 80GB PATA Storage
• 320GB SATA II Storage
• Yamaha SW1000XG

Its not the meatiest machine… its not the fastest… but… it didn’t cost the earth, and… heres the important bit… I can play HalfLife 2, HDR enabled at 1280×1024 with everything up and 4x FSAA and 4x AF… and WOW… it looks lush Even Ultima Online runs like it should… no lag

Somehow I can sense quite a lot of gaming coming on
